Homosexuality Depression

Homosexuals are at enlarged risk of melancholy moreover they suffer from suicidal tendencies, alcoholism, bodily and sexual abuse. This could be due to discrimination in the society and the related sense of seclusion.

The major stress skilled by homosexuals is the strain of dealing with the heterosexual macro-culture. They always deny their sexual orientation to others. Owing to this 'double' life style, they may face depression. Those who inform others of their sexual orientation and are comfortable with their homosexual identity are less likely to be depressed.

The quantity and quality of sources of social support affect people's ability to cope with depression. Homosexuals find their friends as the most frequent providers of social support then comes partner, family and co-workers. Homosexual women suffer great depression as a result of marital disruption in the form of separation or divorce. But they can adapt to the situation better that heterosexual women with similar tribulations, since they are self reliant as far as earnings and social support are concerned. Hence the end of a relationship does not incapacitate them. Since the society is not supportive, suicidal tendencies are high in homosexual teenagers.

They do not have access to homosexual resources and they depend on their school system or parents for information regarding homosexual issues. The consequence would be adverse - they may get punished or may not be taken seriously.

As far as therapists are concerned, most of them are accepting whereas some try to 'reorient' them to be heterosexual. It has been found that church ministers are the least accepting counselors. The problem lies in the fact that neither the therapists nor members of self help groups are experienced in the process. However, eradication of homophobia and promotion of homosexual confirmatory policies would decrease emotional distress including depression
